Railway infrastructure

In 2017, Koleje Wielkopolskie Sp. z o.o. transported 7.5 million passengers on access routes to Poznań.

The Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T)

As part of the work to improve transport accessibility and connectivity, Poznań, as the core city of the TEN-T network with two transport corridors intersecting: the Baltic-Adriatic and the North Sea-Baltic, saw the following developments:

• modernisation of railway sections connecting Poznań with Warsaw (E20)
• modernisation of sections of the railway line connecting Poznań with Wrocław and Szczecin (E59)
• preparatory works for the commencement of the construction of Poznań’s southern bypass along the A2 motorway.

During the year the Poznań Główny station serviced nearly 150,000 passenger trains, including 14,6000 rapid transit trains.
As part of the national Railway Station Investment Programme, the reconstruction of the Western Railway Station and the Poznań-Garbary Railway Station has begun.

Regional connections

Rail transport services in the area of Poznań agglomeration are provided by 2 companies:

• Przewozy Regionalne Sp. z o.o.

Koleje Wielkopolskie Sp. z o.o.

Koleje Wielkopolskie Sp. z o.o. provides transport services to the inhabitants of the Wielkopolska Region from 7 directions (in a radial layout): Kutno, Zbąszynek, Mogilno, Wolsztyn, Gołańcz, Kępno, and Krotoszyn. The last two connections were launched in December 2017. It is estimated that in 2017 the company transported a total of 7.5 million passengers only on access routes to Poznań.

In 2017, Koleje Wielkopolskie was awarded the „Najwyższa Jakość Quality International” award. The distinction was awarded in the Services category (services of the highest quality) with the QI Silver Emblem.

Poznań Metropolitan Railway

In 2017, as part of the Poznań Metropolitan Railway (PKM) project, Poznań is to be connected with the surrounding communes through a developed network of railway connections, providing an alternative to road and bus transport:

• the „Master Plan for Poznań Metropolitan Railway” was completed
• a competition for the logo of the Poznań Metropolitan Railway was announced and resolved, with more than 150 projects submitted
• agreements were signed with local government units that are members of the Association and are located outside its area on co-financing of connections as part of the Poznań Metropolitan Railway on routes from Poznań to Wągrowiec (agreements were signed by the Wągrowiecki District, the Wągrowiec Commune and city, Murowana Goślina, Skoki, Czerwonak), Jarocin (agreements were signed by the Środa and Jarocin District, the communes of Kórnik, Jarocin, Środa, Krzykosy, Nowe Miasto n. Wartą), Nowy Tomyśl (agreements signed by the Nowy Tomyśl District, the communes of Nowy Tomyśl, Opalenica, Buk, Dopiewo) and Grodzisk Wielkopolski (agreements signed by the Grodzisk Wielkopolski District, the city of Grodzisk Wielkopolski, and the Stęszew, Luboń, Komorniki, and Granowo communes). The City of Poznań and the Poznań District also participate in all agreements.

Within the Poznań Metropolitan Railway, trains between Poznań and the communes which are partners of the project will run at a frequency of 30 minutes during rush hours.

The project will be co-financed by: the regional self-government, the City of Poznań as well as the districts and communes located along 9 railway lines of the Poznań Railway Junction. PKM will cover an area within a radius of approx. 50 km from Poznań, and the terminal stations will be located in: Nowy Tomyśl, Grodzisk Wielkopolski, Kościan, Jarocin, Września, Gniezno, Wągrowiec, Oborniki, and Szamotuły. At the turn of 2019 and 2020 trains in this system will go to Oborniki, and in 2020 – to Września and Kościan. The last stage will include connections to Szamotuły and Gniezno in 2021.
